Placement tests gauge your current skills in a subject area and correlate to placement score ranges. Placement scores help academic advisors to place you into classes where you will be the most successful. Students must complete placement tests in mathematics, English, and world languages. All students must take the required placement tests prior to registering for classes at IUPUI. To maximize your orientation advising session, these assessments must to be completed prior to your orientation program. Below you will find links and information to help you determine your score on each type of assessment. Please review your scores to be as prepared as possible to meet with your advisor.
The Necessity of Placement Tests
ALEKS Math Placement
The ALEKS placement consists of the initial assessment, learning modules, and four opportunities for reassessment. It is important that you take the initial assessment seriously because it will determine your starting point in mathematics. After you've completed your initial assessment, you will see a detailed pie chart of your topic mastery called MyPie. Choose More Detailed Report to see your scores as a percentage score. Below the pie chart are the courses you are eligible to enroll in based on your score. Print your results and write in the courses you're eligible to take based on the table found here https://tc.iupui.edu/testing/testscores/math.asp. Bring this document with you during your orientation advising sessions.
English Guided Self-Placement
Being successful involves starting off in the right English course, one that will support and challenge you. Instead of using a writing test to determine where you should start, we invite you to reflect on your experiences using materials we have prepared. This process is called guided self-placement. After you have learned about IUPUI’s three first-year writing courses and thought about questions we have prepared, you will be able to choose the course that’s right for you. If you are a nonnative English speaker, please click here to learn more about the English for Academic Purposes placement test.
Chemistry Placement Examination
The Chemistry Placement Examination (CPE) is an assessment to evaluate readiness for college-level chemistry courses. All students who have not completed and received a grade of C– or better in a college-level chemistry course are required to take the CPE prior to enrolling in CHEM-C 105.
The CPE is an open-book, 45-minute online tool to evaluate readiness to begin the main science major sequence, CHEM-C 105–106. You cannot receive assistance from any person during the examination to ensure accuracy of the placement process. The exam can be taken on any computer with reliable Internet access, but mobile devices or pads are not suitable for testing. You must have a valid IU username, and you will only be allowed one attempt at the examination.

World Languages Placement
Students who have previously taken a world language in high school or have previous experience in that language are eligible to take the World Language Placement Test. The online test is currently administered in French, German, or Spanish. Your score on the World Language Placement Test indicates which IUPUI language course you are recommended to take. Print your results and write in the courses you're eligible to take based on the table found here:
If a test is not offered in the language in which you have taken coursework, please discuss this with your academic advisor.
