As you can see, there is a lot to accomplish at orientation! While orientation leaders and academic advisors have knowledge and suggestions to share, they do not know your interests, talents, and plans for the future. To prepare and to make the most of your advising sessions, complete the Pre-Advising Planning Guide so that orientation advisors can learn more about you. Also, you need to find the degree map for your major(s) and prepare a list of course ideas and questions that you would like to present to the advisors. It is essential that you think about these things and bring all of these materials with you to orientation. This will ensure you are prepared for your final orientation advising session.
Prepare for Advising
What to expect from meeting with the academic advisor
Meeting with an academic advisor is an important piece to your success at IUPUI. At orientation, you and your advisor will:
- Interpret scores from your placement exams
- Discuss how AP, IB, CLEP, or dual credit will count toward your academic plan (if applicable)
- Review your Pre-Advising Planning Guide
- Select appropriate first semester classes that fill requirements and satisfy your interests
To have a productive first advising session and to take your first step toward a successful transition to college, thoroughly review the next few sections!
