What is ALEKS
ALEKS is not a typical placement test, but a dynamic math assessment tool designed to help place you in the right math class so you don’t spend time taking a course that you don’t need!
The ALEKS experience begins with an initial assessment that uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine your current math content knowledge. You will then have the opportunity to complete learning modules that are customized to your skill level and that will help you improve on key concepts—in turn helping to improve your score on the additional assessments!
By working through the ALEKS learning modules and completing up to five total assessments, you can ensure that you are matched to the appropriate IUPUI math course. Learn more about ALEKS or register to start ALEKS.
Who participates in ALEKS
ALEKS is helpful for anyone who hasn’t taken a college-level math course and for those who haven’t taken math courses for a few semesters. The test will help you and your advisor select the right course for you to ensure that you start your college career off on the right foot.
Students who fall under any of the following categories must complete ALEKS:
- If you are an incoming freshman.
- If it has been more than two years since you have taken a college-level math course.
- If you have never taken a college-level math course.
- If you took courses in high school that provided college credit (dual credit courses).
What your ALEKS score means
Your ALEKS score helps us determine which math course will help you be most successful. Your advisor will use the score to select the most appropriate course in which to enroll you. Find out what courses you can choose based on your score.
If you are not satisfied with the score you receive on your initial assessment, you can take advantage of the ALEKS learning modules to increase your score. You can retake the ALEKS test up to four times within your six-month subscription period. But remember, you must complete the assessment before your orientation date!
What the ALEKS Learning Modules are
Simply put, the ALEKS modules allow students like you to improve your ALEKS placement test score before you are placed into a course. After you receive your initial assessment score from ALEKS, you can access the learning modules to brush up on the test material and take the subsequent assessments to get a better score!
